In 2025, the Government gave approval for all state and state-integrated schools and kura to close for instruction during term time for four half-days in each of the 2026 and 2027 school years.

Curriculum Days 2026 & 2027 to support implementation

    • These days have been provided for professional learning and planning to support the implementation of curriculum and assessment changes
    • Schools and kura can choose:
      • when to hold these days.
      • whether to combine half days to support their planning needs.
      • what the focus will be (as long as this relates to the changes to curriculum and assessment).
    • Parents and whānau must receive at least six weeks’ notice before any closure.
      • To help minimise disruption for parents and whānau, and to support collaboration, schools and kura are encouraged to coordinate the delivery of these days locally.
    • The half days where schools and kura are closed for instruction do not need to be made up later in the year.
    •  More information is available here: School opening and closing for instruction - Ministry of Education

    Delivering your Teacher-only day

Schools and kura are encouraged to coordinate the delivery of their days locally.

For support with coordinating your TODs, and to find out what collaborative events are planned in your local area, you can contact your local Ministry office.
