Programmes for Students (PfS) - Accelerating Learning Literacy (ALL) & Accelerating Learning in Mathematics (ALiM)

With a comprehensive set of supports now in place and in development for literacy and mathematics there will be no further extensions to the Accelerating Learning in Literacy (ALL) and Accelerating Learning in Mathematics (ALiM) programmes beyond the end of 2025. This is part of the shift towards providing front-line and in-class support directly to students, including a new digital writing tool for Years 6–8, a series of writing modules for Years 3–5, new maths targeted staffing for Years 0–6, and a Years 7–8 maths acceleration programme.

This suite of initiatives is designed to support more students, and be targeted to where need is greatest.

    For Teachers

Teachers who were accessing the ALL and ALiM programmes will complete the programme this year. All schools can still access all of the Ministry’s Structured Literacy Approaches and Structured Approaches to Maths PLD.

From next year teachers will also be able to access PLD for the new Maths Acceleration Programme (MAP), which is designed to lift achievement for Years 0-6 | Tau 0-6 students and ākonga who are not yet meeting curriculum expectations, with an initial focus on Years 3-6 and Tau 3-6 for Māori medium and kaupapa Māori.

The MAP programme includes professional learning support for participating teachers and Ministry-funded networks to support teachers taking part in the programme. The PLD will focus on growing teacher maths expertise and building a community of expert maths teachers, as well building maths leadership across schools and kura

There will be continued SLA PLD for primary and intermediate teachers of Years 0-8 students from Term 1, 2026, and the existing targeted PLD for SLA intervention teachers in Years 0-2 will be expanded in 2026 to teachers of Years 0-6.

Please direct any queries to pfs.queries@education.govt.nz.

    New Writing Programme

The new writing programme will cover students from Year 3-8, with a series of modules for Years 3-5 to be taught in person and a digital tool for supported learning in Years 6-8. The new programme will provide for up to 120,000 students, compared to the 4171 students currently being supported by ALL and ALiM.

The programme is expected to be in use by 2026 and will be designed to provide targeted support to students to accelerate progress and achievement in line with curriculum expectations. The programme will enable teachers to deliver targeted, evidence-based instruction to small groups of students. It will be designed to intervene early, before students enter secondary school, and provide schools with direct access to evidence-based programmes, which reflect identities, cultures, and communities of Māori and Pacific learners.

The writing tool will also build on other supports such as the new knowledge-rich English learning area and writing guidance for earlier years, so that foundational skills established in Years 1–5 are built upon with targeted digital acceleration for Years 6–8 students.

More information about the new writing programme, including eligibility criteria, will be communicated to schools as it is available. For any queries, please email writing.supports@education.govt.nz.
