Latest Curriculum Insights Study Results Released

The Curriculum Insights and Progress Study (Curriculum Insights) is the lead indicator used to measure progress towards the Government’s achievement target of 80 percent of Year 8 students being at or above the expected curriculum level for their age in reading, writing, and maths by 2030. 

Curriculum Insights provides original evidence about how Year 3, 6 and 8 students in English-medium education are achieving. It supports the Government’s education priorities for smarter assessment and reporting by providing consistent monitoring of student progress and achievement and using data and evidence for consistent improvement in student achievement. 

What we learn from the Curriculum Insights studies helps us strengthen the implementation of the updated national curriculum – including the resources and supports being developed for students, teachers, leaders, and whānau. 

The 2024 results from the Curriculum Insights and Progress Study are now available. This year’s report provides national data on how students in Years 3, 6 and 8 are progressing in mathematics and writing under the refreshed New Zealand Curriculum.

Maths achievement remained stable between 2023 and 2024, while writing results show that more support is needed to strengthen foundational skills. These results form a baseline for future reporting.

Significant investments are already underway including mandated curriculum, resources and professional learning. A study for students learning through te reo Māori, Tīrewa Mātai, is also in development.

The Minister will be launching a plan to lift student writing achievement following the release of the Curriculum Insights results. More information will follow on Tāhūrangi.
